Rio Grande was the winner of the stallion performance test at Novemberhill Farm in 1991 scoring
an excellent 135 points with consistently high scores for jumping (134 pts) and rideability (130pts.).
Rio Grande started his show career in the dressage ring. He was Basic Dressage Champion at the
prestigious Tournament of Champions as a four year old. From 1994 to 1997 he was
shown very successfully in the Grand Prix jumper ring by CET member Eric Lamaze. They were part of
Team Canada that won the Nations Cup in New York and Toronto in 1995  and they won an International Class at the 1995 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. One of the most memorable events in Rio Grande's show career was a close second place in the Shell Cup Derby at Spruce Meadows.

In 2000 and the early part of

2001,  Rio has been competing at the West Coast under American Jenni Martin. They won a
$ 50,000 Grand Prix at Hits Tahoe and placed in many more Grand Prix.

Rio Grande passed away in 2007 and excellent quality frozen semen is available.

Rio Grande's sire is Raphael who has produced several international show jumpers such as Radiator,
winner of the 2000 Spruce Meadows Du Maurier or Raphael (E.Lamaze)  and Robinson (R. Spooner)
Ramiro Z, often called the stallion of the century has produced such famous horses as "Ratina Z", the
double Olympic gold medal winner (1992 and 1996) and 1993 World Cup Winner.
Rio Grande has sired many of the best  Hunters currently showing in the United States such as

Eye Remember Rio, Due North, Rave, Rio Bravo, Rio Bronco & Rio Renoir.

 Rio Bronco, bred at W. Charlot Farms, is 2002 AHSA Horse of the Year and 2002 & 2003 AHSA A/O Hunter of the Year.

 Rio Renoir was the Champion of the $ 60,000 National Horse Show Hunter Championship in Wellington, Florida in December of 2006.

 

Thanks to Rio Grande's offspring, A. Walch/W. Charlot Farms has won the USEF Leading Breeder of Hunters award every for the past four years (2004 - 2007).

Rio Grande has  produced several Open jumpers such as  two time WC- Q winner  Catwalk & $ 50,000 GP Winner Rio Rhapsody.

 

Rio Grande's offspring are very well known for their wonderful disposition, outstanding athletic abilities
and their versatility. Rio Grande is one of the few stallions who truly put a stamp on his offspring.
Rio  has produced several approved breeding stallions and many premium broodmares.
