W. Cabardino

wins

Combined Hunter Championship

under Erynn Ballard

What a wonderful end to the 2007 show season. Cabardino and Erynn won two over fences class as well as  the hack class at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.

Erynn & Cabardino had an incredible season - winning the Champion or Reserve title at all but one of the shows they competed in.

CSHA Stallion Inspection:

our Hanoverian stallion, Vasco Da Gama, was the highest scoring stallion at the 2007 CSHA stallion inspection receiving First Premium status.

Vasco has a first class pedigree combining the proven performance bloodlines of Voltaire, Raphael and Grannus. The performance record of the 2007 Ontario Champion for 6 year old Jumpers has been impeccable  and we are pleased to add this beautiful, tall,  black Hanoverian stallion with the most incredible temperament to our quality selection of approved breeding stallions for the 2008 breeding  season.

In addition, Rio's Filius received full breeding approval from CSHA !

Palgrave, ON - Cornerstone Farm Dressage Show

We had a very good time at the 4 year old Dressage Futurity class for Eastern Canada this year.

With Tom Dvorak, who showed Viva's Athletico so successfully last year, competing at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and being instrumental in Team Canada winning a Silver medal over the weekend, it was a wonderful and unique opportunity for our dedicated and hard working staff members to participate at a horse show. Maria, Audrey and Inga all did a wonderful job, preparing their young horses for this event in less than two weeks and achieving very respectable scores - all over 60% !

Congratulations to

Rio's Donatello & Maria Stecher

Champion - 4 year old Performance Futurity -  achieving over 70% !

Donatello is a hunter prospect in his "real life" and sadly lost one eye last fall. This was his first horse show and he was not at all intimidated by all the activity around him. Thank you, Maria, for doing such a wonderful job with Donatello - it looked like he was an "old pro" in the dressage ring !

Viva's Romina & Audrey Morisette

3rd place

Romina has won one of the four year old jumper development class earlier this year and Audrey did a terrific job preparing &  guiding this sensitive, beautiful mare through the test.

Rio's Lovestory & Inga Walch - Allard

4th place

Lovestory is an amazing young jumper and has won two four year old JD classes earlier this year. Thank you Inga, for doing such a great job with Lovestory.

We know how busy all three of you are at this time of the year with looking after the  foals, collecting stallions and breeding the mares - we are very happy how well you presented these three green horses - A big Thank you to all three of you!

WCF born Rio's Showman, who has already done quite well in the hunter ring, came fifth with Stephanie Inglis.

Thank you to the Canadian Warmblood Association for initiating the Futurity classes - hopefully more and more riders and breeders will use this wonderful opportunity to show their horses in future years.

July 8, 2007

We are absolutely thrilled that WCF born "Catwalk" (aks Rio's Ramona)  won the $ 70,000 Woldcup Qualifier in Blainville, Quebec. This is the first time that a horse born at our farm has won such a big class and it is very fitting that it happened shortly after Catwalk's sire, Rio Grande, passed away. Congratulations to Darrin Dlin and his team.

June 29, 2007

Barrie - Cornerstone Farms

Cabardino and Erynn Ballard were Reserve Champion in the working hunter division during week one and Champion once again during week two. Thank you, Erynn, it is just wonderful how you can do so well with Cabardino, never practicing but just meeting him at the horse shows in between Cabardino's  breeding duties.

Jumper Development Classes

Four year olds class

Rio's Lovestory wins her second class of the season - this time with Erynn Ballard achieving once again the highest score of the day - 92 points.

Futi's Calypso had a beautiful round and has been very consistent placing fourth in all three classes to date. Viva's Romina was 9th with one rail.

Five year old class

Congratulations to GH Fortune's Son & Carly Campbell Cooper riding for owner and breeder Glenhadden Farm. Fortune's Son is by Futurist and looks very much like his sire.  They had an absolutely beautiful round and achieved 91.5 points to win the class.

Six year old class

Vasco da Gama and Martien van der Hoeven had a clear first round and placed 9th with two rails in the jump off.

Futurist and Erynn Ballard  were back in the ring together for the first time since last September and won both classes they entered in!

We truly enjoyed seeing Futurist having fun in the ring again.

Ottawa Summer Dressage Classic

Tom Dvoark & Viva's Salieri W    did it again!

Winner - FEI Young Horse Six Year old Finale

Cabardino wins Regular Working Hunter Championship again

with Wayne McLellan as Erynn Ballard is still at Spruce Meadows

Cabardino has now competed at five horse shows in 2007, bringing home the Regular Working Hunter Championship ribbon from four of the five shows.

Jumper Development Classes ... pictures to follow

We had an absolutely amazing day at Palgrave with WCF Bred/owned horses winning all three age groups on Saturday, June 16.

Four year old class

First - Viva's Romina  (Viva Voltaire x Romina by Ritual) with a score of 90 points -this was her very first horse show and we are just thrilled

Fourth - Futi's Calypso W  (Futurist x Caroline by Capitol) with a score of 85.5 points

Eighth - Rio's Lovestory W  (Rio Grande x Lavinia by Lavall) with one rail

All horses were ridden by Martien van der Hoeven - thank you, to Martien, for doing such an incredible job with these horses despite the fact that he has only ridden them a few times before.

Five year old class

First - "Augustine" aka Rio's Lucio W  (Rio Grande - Santa Lucia) - bred by WCF and now owned by Aubrie Desylva and ridden by Rob Carey. They had an amazing round with the highest style score of the day - 92 points for Augustine and Rob Carey. Thank you to Di Langmuir and Virginia Tinti  for their support and loyalty.

Seventh - Futuro W (Futurist x Sunshine) and Heather McDonald with an absolutely beautiful round. Thank you to Mike and Stephanie Grinyer and Heather for the great job they are doing with "Future Star" as they call him.

Six year old class

First - Vasco Da Gama - our big black Hanoverian stallion by Voltaire - Raphael with a double clear round and the fastest time in the jumpoff. He did not look that fast, but he was very efficient and covered a lot of ground with each stride under the guidance of Martien van der Hoeven.

Seventh - Rio's Diorello W (Rio Grande x Diorella) with one rail.

Beginner Children's Hunter

Congratulations to

Escador & Hilary D'Souza

Reserve Champion

winning one over fences class and placing second in another; we are happy that Escador, who had a bad injury as a three year old, found such a loving home.

June 7, 2007

Palgrave, ON

During a two day break from his very busy breeding schedule

Cabardino wins Regular Working Hunter Championship again

this time

with Wayne McLennan as his regular rider, Erynn Ballard, is competing in the Pam Am trials at Spruce Meadows.

Cabardino and Wayne McLellan won all six over fences classes that they competed in - thank you very much Wayne, Erynn and Audrey for doing such an amazing job with Cabardino.

Spruce Meadows, AB

WCF born Catwalk (aka "Rio's Ramona")  sits in fourth place in the Pan Am trials under Darren Dlin after four of the five qualifiers have taken place.

Catwalk (Rio Grande x Landgraf - Furioso) is the only Canadian born horse that is competing in the trials.

Good luck in Saturday's final class - we will be watching and keeping our fingers crossed for both Catwalk & Darren Dlin  and for  Erynn Ballard and her mount Robin.

Congratulations to

Rio Renoir & Brad Wolf

Amateur Owner over 35 Champion

Grand Amateur Hunter Champion

what a remarkable achievement for Mr. Wolf, a heart surgeon,  who meets Renoir only at the horse shows.

May 26, 2007

The first jumper development class of the year was a bitter sweet event for us with

Rio's Lovestory W

(Rio Grande x Lavinia)

winning the four year olds class under Martien van der Hoeven with 97 points, the highest score of the day. This was the first time that one of our Rios was back in the ring after Rio's death.

Our four year old Futurist offspring did very well, too, with scores of 88 points for Futi's Rosario W (Futurist x Rio Grande) and 85 for Futi's Calypso (Futurist x Capitol).

Five year old "Augustine" (aka Rio's Lucio - Rio Grande x Santa Lucia) did extremely well with Rob Carey. He achieved the score or 92 points and came third for his owner Aubrie DeSylva under the guidance of Di Langmuir.

The six year old class was won by our big black Hanoverian stallion Vasco da Gama (Voltaire x Raphael) who had the only double clear round of the class. Viva's Lightning v(Viva Voltaire x Sandro x Raphael) came third with one rail in the jump off.

Thank you to Martien van der Hoeven for doing such an excellent job (this was only his second time riding most of the horses) and to our staff at home, Inge, Audrey and Maria who prepared the horses very well during this extremely busy time at the farm.

Canada Loses International Show Jumper and Sire, Rio Grande

Stratford, Ontario – International show jumping competitor and renowned sire, Rio Grande, passed away at the age of 21.

Arguably the most influential sport horse sire standing in Canada, Rio Grande died suddenly on May 21 after suffering a heart attack.  Owned by Augustin Walch of W. Charlot Farms, Rio Grande was a 1986 bay Hannoverian stallion by Raphael x Windhuk.

Purchased by Augustin Walch as a three-year-old at the Verden auction in Germany, Rio Grande won the Stallion Performance Test in 1991 before going on to enjoy an international show jumping career.  Partnered with Eric Lamaze, Rio Grande competed at the 1996 World Cup Final in Geneva and qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.  Rio Grande was also a member of winning Nations' Cup teams at the National Horse Show in New York City and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1995.

Following his retirement from competition in 2001, Rio Grande quickly cemented his reputation as a prolific sire of show jumping, hunter, dressage, and eventing sport horses.  For three consecutive years, in 2004, 2005 and 2006, W. Charlot Farms was named the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Hunter Breeder of the Year, due in large part to the points accumulated by Rio Grande offspring.  Among his most successful hunter progeny are Rio Renoir, Eye Remember Rio, Rio Bravo, Rio Bronco, Due North, and Rave.

In addition, Rio Grande offspring are currently competing at the Grand Prix level in show jumping.  Rio's Rhapsody has enjoyed success under Erynn Ballard while Catwalk contested the 2007 Pan American Games Selection Trials with Darren Dlin.

"Rio Grande has played such an influential role in our breeding program and, more importantly, he has been a member of our family for the past 18 years," said Walch.  "We owe him so much, and he will always have a special place in our hearts."

Rio Grande's great legacy will live on in his offspring.

March 2007

Wellington, Florida

WCF born "Catwalk" by Rio Grande (aka Rio's Ramona - second from the left in the picture above) had an amazing performance in the $ 100,000 Grand Prix AT WEF on Sunday, March 4. Catwalk and her rider, Darren Dlin, were working on a clear performance when the bridle began to slip over the horse's ears. By the time they approached the triple combination, the bridle had completely fallen off and was dangling in front of Catwalk's chest. Incredibly, Dlin & Catwalk managed to jump clear through the triple, much to the crowd's delight. Unfortunately Dlin could not steer Catwalk to the very last jump without the bridle and they were eliminated for going off course.

Catwalk is the full sister to our breeding stallion Rio's Ricardo.

Tom Dvorak and Viva's Athletico W

are

Champions - 4 year olds

Eastern Zone - Dressage

during the inaugural year of the Canadian Performance Futurity.

admittedly, there was not too much competition in this class but their score of 68.395% was quite remarkable given than Ellen & Tom  Dvorak had only ridden this young stallion for 10 days prior to the show and Viva's Athletico was trained as a hunter before. Halting on the center line seemed to be the hardest part of the test for Athletico...

Actionprix

We are thrilled - another beautiful stallion by Viva Voltaire with the most wonderful attitude and the versatility & movement to do well in more than one discipline.

photos by Actionprix

Thank you so much, Ellen & Tom, for doing such a  wonderful job in such a short time !!

And  a thank you goes to the Canadian Warmblood Association for this new series and for making it available to all Canadian bred horses. We are sure there will be many more horses competing next year and later on this year  in the hunter and jumper futurities that will take place at the Tournament of Champions in September.

We are very pleased that Viva's Athletico got a 4th and 5th placed ribbon with Martien van der Hoeven in Baby Green Hunter over fences classes and Rios Ricardo and Martien placed well in several 3'6" Conformation classes and even won one over fences class.

Michelle Folden and Grande Crimson Win USEF/Markel Young Dressage Horse Selection Trials for Central USA

In a small but impressive field of 6-year-olds, the judges at the 2006 USEF/Markel Young Horse Central Selection Trial at the Paxton Farm CDI in Ohio were pleased with all entries presented before them, noting qualities in each horse which could make them “a horse for the future.”

But it was Andrea Driscoll’s Grande Crimson, a registered Canadian Warmblood mare by the Hanoverian stallion Rio Grande which “enchanted” them the most, winning the blue cooler and top honors in the first leg of three Young Horse Selection Trials for the FEI World Championships for Young Horses, and the USEF/Markel National Young Horse Championships. Rider/Trainer Michelle Folden was joined by her family for the Mother’s Day weekend show in Batavia, Ohio, but she admits her owner didn’t know about the venture.

Congratulations to Grande Crimson's breeder, Nikki Lishman of Canterbrook Farms !

Congratulations to

Tom Dvorak and Viva's Salieri W  !!!

Viva's Salieri W, a five year old Hanoverian stallion by Viva Voltaire, born here at the farm  achieved spectacular scores at his very first horse show this weekend at the Paxton Farm CDI in Batavia, Ohio under Tom Dvorak

Tom & Salieri started in four classes and had scores over 70% in three of the classes, winning two (one with over 74 % !!) and placing second and third in the other two classes

Thank you, Tom and Ellen for the terrific job you are doing with "Socks" and we are extremely happy that we can report some incredible dressage results for a change!!

WCF bred horses win two Hunter Championships in One Week at WEF in Tampa!!

Eye Remember Rio & Rio Renoir both won their hunter divisions inTampa this week;

Congratulations to

Rio Renoir & Holly Orlando

Champion - 2nd Year Green Hunter

Excerpt from Thursday's Press Release:

The final championship awarded on Thursday was in the Second Year Green Hunters. Walking in for the presentation was a horse that has become quite accustomed to wearing fluttering ribbons on his bridle. Rio Renoir and Holly Orlando received three first place ribbons and a fifth over fences, as well as a sixth place under saddle. Reserve champion in the division was Music Street with Scott Stewart for Alexa Weisman.

This week was a different situation for Orlando and Rio Renoir. “In Palm Beach, I have all of my own horses showing with Old Salem, and I would just meet Rio at the ring,” Orlando explained. “I’ve never really been a part of Rio’s preparation. Usually everyone else does all the hard work, and I just get on and ride the great horse. This week, I got to ride him on Tuesday and yesterday morning. I went back to his stall and got him carrots. I got to pretend he was mine for the first few days this week. To be part of preparing him and still have him go well felt really good.”

It was a great chance for horse and rider to get to know each other better and bond. “He’s so sweet and funny,” Orlando said with a smile. “He has a great personality and is a winner. Rio’s groom, José, says that Rio’s his favorite horse, so I know he’s easy to take care of too. That big white star is really hard to resist. It was nice to get to know him better without his braids.”

Eye Remember Rio  &Tory Watters Leblond

Champion - A/A  36 - 50 Hunter Division

Excerpt from Saturday's Press Release:

It will be a fight to the finish in the Adult Amateur 36-50 Hunter division for the circuit championship. Leaping their way up the charts are Eye Remember Rio and Victoria Watters LeBlond. They won all three over fences classes this week for the championship, which puts them near the top of the rankings. Leading the division going into this week was the reserve champion, Romanze, and owner/rider Carolyn Anderson.

“We’ve been reserve circuit champion for the past two years, so I decided we weren’t going to go down for the third year,” LeBlond said with a laugh. “It’ll be a fight to the end!”

After winning both classes on Friday, LeBlond said the main thing on her mind was, “I was having a really good time and just didn’t want to choke for today.” She added, “For me, it was a great way to end the circuit. This was my last class, but somebody else will show my horse next week for me. I loved ending circuit that way.”

LeBlond has nothing but superlatives for her Canadian Sporthorse, Eye Remember Rio. “Rio is a gift from God. He is the best horse that I’ve ever ridden. He’s the most forgiving horse. All you have to do is squeeze and point, and you’ve got it. He’s absolutely incredible.”

March 24, 2006 - USEF rankings

Both Augustin Walch and Rio Grande are at the  top of the current USEF standings. Augustin has a substantial lead in the hunter breeder category and Rio a 1,000 points  lead in the hunter sire rankings.

It is wonderful that several "new horses" are now collecting points on our behalf, such as "American Beauty" aka Rio's Beauty, a 2001 chestnut filly who was showing successfully in Indio. Rio's Splash (aka Rio's Magic aka Rio's Magical), another chestnut filly born in 2001,  was also successfully competing in Indio for her new owner.

Rio Rojo (aka Rio's Jazz) and Timberlake (aka Vivaldi by Viva Voltaire) competed successfully in the Pre Green Hunter division under Mark Purcell against their former stablemates Rio's Splash and American Beauty.

While visiting in Wellington, we were thrilled to see "Rio's Image", a 2001 colt who has a special place in our hearts. He lost his mother "Sandro's Girl" when he was only four weeks old and we were always trying to help him "steal" milk from Vivaldi's and Rio's  Beauty's dams, Dunja and Sonett, as he much preferred that to the "artificial" milk. He got a lot of bite marks  when he tried to get some "real" milk when we were not around to hold on to the mares, but he has now grown into a beautiful 17.0 hh horse. He is showing under the name "Rio Redemption" against his older full brother "Eye Remember Rio" in the A/A hunter division and, at only 5 years of age, has won classes at Wellington and beaten his older, very experienced and incredibly successful brother in the process. We are very proud of you, Image!

  Augustin & Rio's Image

Futurist showed in FEI classes under Erynn Ballard during the last week of showing at Wellington and went clear both times, placing 5th and 6th respectively.

After their incredibly successful first week as hunters in Ocala, Pour La Vie and Cabardino were shipped to the Winter Equestrian Festival in West Palm Beach to  compete  against some of the best hunters in North America.

"La Vie" and Erynn Ballard earned a 5th and 7th place ribbon in the Green Conformation Hunter division, quite respectable given the extremely short period of training and the tough competition they were facing.

Erynn & Cabardino exceeded our highest expectations by actually winning a class in the 4'Hunter Regular Hunter Division where they were competing against some of the best hunter riders , such as Scott Stewart, Holly Orlando and Tommy Serio, and their top mounts.

Cabardino has certainly proven that he has everything it takes to be a top hunter.

He is now returning to Stratford and will be available for collection

Press release from West Palm Beach:

The high score of the horse show was given today to one of the top hunters of the nation. Rio Renoir and Holly Orlando had a breathtaking first trip and were rewarded with a 95 in the first over fences class in the Second Year Green Working Hunter division. The successful gelding, owned by Brad Wolf, also won both over fences classes yesterday. With another second place over fences and a third under saddle, Rio Renoir easily won the championship.

Rio Renoir and Holly Orlando have therefore qualified for the Hunter Spectacular on Saturday night. We will keep our fingers crossed for Rio Renoir who was born here in Stratford  in 1999.

A second, WCF born entry had a great day...once again at West Palm Beach

Eye Remember Rio & V. Watters Leblond finished first and second in the two A/O Hunter classes (36-50) .. best of luck for the other classes tomorrow.

in the two over fences classes in the

4' Regular Working Hunter division.

We are absolutely thrilled as Cabardino had only been trained and shown as a jumper before;

Augustin receives the 2005 USEF Hunter Breeder Award

December 2005

2005 USEF Rankings

Leading Hunter Breeder - 1st Augustin Walch/WCF

Leading Hunter Sire - 2nd Rio Grande

By Jennifer Ward, Starting Gate Communications:

December 21, 2005 – Stratford, Ontario – For the second year in a row, Canada’s W. Charlot Farms has been named the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Hunter Breeder of the Year.

Owned by Augustin and Christine Walch, W. Charlot Farms first took the national title in 2004 after accumulating 7,673 points awarded for performance in the USEF rankings. This year, W. Charlot Farms was the runaway winner with 18,999 points, placing the Canadian breeding operation more than 13,000 points ahead of its closest competition. In addition, W. Charlot Farms’ flagship stallion, Rio Grande, placed second behind the late Voltaire in the USEF Leading Hunter Sire rankings with 20,510 points, making Rio Grande the most successful living stallion.

“We focus on breeding horses that are athletic, good-looking, have three good gaits and, overall, have a great mind and a good attitude towards their work,” said Augustin Walch of the secret to his success. “We have a saying in German that means when you are really focused and dedicated, the luck will follow.”

Walch left his native Germany in 1980, bringing with him approximately 15 horses and establishing W. Charlot Farms in Stratford, ON, a small theatre town south of Toronto. While he first stepped into the limelight as the owner of Rio Grande, a Hannoverian stallion by Raphael that competed at the 1996 World Cup Final and qualified for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games under Eric Lamaze, Walch soon became known for his breeding program as well. While the majority of success to date has been produced by Rio Grande’s offspring, W. Charlot Farms also stands five other stallions, all with top European bloodlines, including Viva Voltaire by Voltaire, Futurist by For Pleasure, Esprit d’Amour by Espri, Cabardino by Carpaccio and Rio’s Ricardo by Rio Grande.

“We have enjoyed great success with Rio Grande, but now there are other horses competing and earning points that are sired by our other stallions,” said Walch, who celebrated the 25th anniversary of W. Charlot Farms in 2005. “It is really a matter of math – the more horses we produce that are competitive, the more points we will accumulate. We are fortunate that many of the horses we breed find skilled owners, riders and trainers who are able to successfully develop their potential.”

In 2005, a total of nine horses allowed W. Charlot Farms to retain its Leading Hunter Breeder title for the second consecutive year. Six of the nine were sired by Rio Grande including the Canadian Sport Horse gelding, Rio Renoir, who dominated throughout the 2005 season to gain an impressive total of 6,034 points in the First Year Green Working Hunter division; Rio Bravo gained 2,974 points in the Junior divisions, and Rave earned 2,413 points, also in the Junior divisions.

Of those not sired by Rio Grande, Allegiance by Skorpio earned 3,668 points; Rio’s Tasha by Rio Bronco earned points in the Children’s Hunter division and Toblerone by Pour Gagne competed in the Adult Amateur divisions.

Nine offspring helped Rio Grande to finish as the runner-up in the Leading Hunter Sire category including Due North with a total of 7,030 points and Rio Renoir with a total of 6,034. Purchased as a three-year-old at the Verden auction in Germany, Rio Grande was retired to stud in 2001 following a long and successful grand prix show jumping career. He is an approved stallion by the Hannoverian, American Hannoverian Society, International Horse Sport Registry, Oldenburg, Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association, and the Canadian Sport Horse Association.

Walch will be presented with the 2005 Hunter Breeder of the Year Award when the USEF Annual Meeting is held January 11-15 in Cincinnati, OH.

With a herd of 150 horses, including 40 broodmares and approximately 30 foals born each year, W. Charlot Farms breeds specifically for the horse sport market. In addition to hunter prospects, W. Charlot Farms is also a leading producer of show jumping horses and, for the past three years, has bred the Four-Year-Old Ontario Champion in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series. For more information on W. Charlot Farms, please visit www.charlotfarm.com or call tel: (519) 271-5322.

“Canada’s Augustin Walch, shown here with W. Charlot Farms’ flagship stallion, Rio Grande, was named the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Hunter Breeder of the Year for the second consecutive year.”

The National Horse Show, Wellington, FL

Congratulations - once again - to

Rio Renoir & Holly Orlando

Owner C & T Deibert - Trainer : Joe Guzman

Champion - $ 60,000 National Horse Show Open Hunter Championship

Wellington, FL- December 3, 2005- Consistency was key to be one of the top twelve hunters at the 122nd National Horse Show and Family Festival, but it also took a brilliant last round to pull off the win. Luckily, Rio Renoir and rider Holly Orlando had both. They were smooth throughout five rounds of competition spread over three days to win the National Horse Show Open Hunter Championship. The 122nd National Horse Show and Family Festival finishes competition tomorrow with the highlight, the Budweiser AGA Championships, presented by Chesapeake Petroleum, at 2 p.m.

Today, the focus of the horse show was on the hunters. The first phase of the competition took place on Wednesday and Thursday during the horses’ respective divisions.  Their scores from the three over fences rounds were averaged together for the “Phase One” score. The twelve horses throughout all five divisions- First Year, Second Year, Green Conformation, Regular Conformation, and W.B. Redfern Regular Working- with the highest Phase One averages were asked to return today for their fourth and fifth rounds. The fourth and fifth round scores were then averaged for a “Phase Two” score. The two phase scores were added for a total that determined the winner.

“Rio”, owned by Why Wait Farm and Cynthia and Thomas Deibert of Wellington, Florida, is a 6 year old Canadian Sporthorse by Rio Grande. He and fellow Wellington resident Orlando came into today’s competition with a Phase One score of 83.5.  In the first round today, they had a high score of 89.5.  Scott Stewart, who rode six horses in the class, led the first round today with an impressive score of 90.916 on Alexandra Stathis’ Truly.

In the second round, horses competed again over a long, flowing course on the grass field of the Internationale Arena. Last to show, Rio and Orlando set a metronome pace and stayed with it for the entire course. They were chasing Stewart and Fellini, owned by Molly Ohrstrom, who had a second round score of 87.16, a Phase Two score of 87.08, and a total of 171.638. Rio rose to the challenge, and the judges rewarded him with a score of 88.75 in the second round. This gave them the Phase Two average score of 89.13 and a total of 172.624.

The win was sweet for Orlando, who won this same class twice with the famous horse Overdressed when the National Horse Show was in New York. “It’s Overdressed’s class, so it means a lot,” she said. Orlando knew that she would not be able to keep track of the complicated scoring system for the class, so she figured she “wouldn’t worry about it.” “My horse is very trustworthy, so I knew he would pull through for us,” she explained, adding with a laugh, “It was past my mathematical abilities!”

The plan with Rio has worked out very well for Orlando and trainer Joe Guzman, who does all of the riding chores outside of the show ring. “Joe does everything, from start to finish. I get on and go in the ring,” Orlando mentioned. Guzman added, “And that’s been working fine! We’re afraid to change it. I get on and do the discipline, and Holly gets on and pats him, so he loves her more than me!”

When asked what they like most about Rio, both answered with a firm, “Everything.” Guzman described, “He’s happy and he’s comfortable and he totally enjoys going to the shows and doing his job. He tries really hard for us, and I totally believe in him. I know when he walks in that he’s going to give it his all.” Orlando explained, “He’s so scopey and athletic. He’s exciting to watch. There’s so much appeal there.”

Coming into the show ring today, Orlando said, “When he walked out there, he was like, ‘Oh, another round…’ But then he saw all of the people and perked up and got a little more into it. I think he rises to the occasion when he goes in the ring. It’s the same no matter where he is, no matter what horse show it is. I don’t think I can say that we had a bad horse show this year. Rio is the most amazing horse.”
